4 Things College Prep Students Should do This Fall

4 Things College Prep Students Should do This Fall Tips From an Irvine College Prep Tutor: 4 Things College Prep Students Should do Before Thanksgiving Break College prep students have adjusted back to classroom activities and are well on their way to completing important tasks that will help them successfully apply to college. Its good for students to have a list of things to complete each month, so they stay on track and dont miss any important deadlines. Although Thanksgiving break seems worlds away, its not that far and students who have goals to meet by that point in the year should start thinking about it now. Whether students are focused on prepping for college entrance exams or studying for AP classes, nows the time to be prepared our private Irvine college prep tutors are here to get you into college. 1. AP courses Students in 10th through 12th grade are probably taking advanced placement courses to help them apply to college and receive college credit before they even start their first day on campus. AP courses are tons of work and take up a lot of a student’s time, so its important that they feel comfortable they are on track to get a 3 or higher on their test the following May. If students aren’t doing as well as they could in any given AP course, theyre encouraged to join a study group or start working with a one-on-one tutor so they can study more efficiently and go over difficult concepts. 2. College entrance exams By Thanksgiving, many students will have already taken their SAT or ACT and may even have their overall scores. Students should compare their scores with the average accepted student at several universities they plan to apply to next fall to see if they qualify. Students who would like to gain a few extra points can arrange to retake their entrance exam in the spring and start working with an expert SAT or ACT tutor to work on any weak areas. Many students gain 100 or more points just by learning how to beat each section of the exam (READ: 8 Reasons Applicants Fail to Get Into the College of their Choice). 3. Organization Maintaining excellent organization is an essential key to success when it comes to the college prep years. Many students let their organization fall by the wayside during the first few weeks of school because their mind is still on summer break. However, if students are falling off track by Thanksgiving, they should take this as an opportunity to get back on top of things and take care of any details that need attention. This may include signing up for the SAT, improving grades in AP courses, arranging volunteer hours, scheduling a campus visit, or choosing a list of colleges to apply to. 4. Selecting colleges and universities Sophomore and junior year are excellent times to schedule campus visits and start thinking about the best options for applications. By the end of sophomore year, students will have an idea of what their GPA will be when it comes time to apply, and theyll have an idea of some subjects that might interest them as potential career fields but they probably wont know exactly what it is they want to major in or specific elements of colleges that will benefit them in the long run. The best way to get an idea of the best colleges is to visit the campus in person and meet some current students. Most colleges provide opportunities for students to take official tours or simply walk around the campus at their leisure. College visits are an essential part of the application process, and Thanksgiving break is a great time to start thinking about scheduling these tours and finding a good time to visit and do further research. Understanding Chemistry - A Short Description

Understanding Chemistry - A Short DescriptionThe term 'chemistry matter' is a term used in the physics field to refer to the collective behavior of any two types of substances that interact with each other in a chemical manner. This matter is used when describing the basic element of chemistry and it was first used by Isaac Newton in the 1600's. He used the term as a tool to explain his experiments on gases and liquids, which involved the observation of what happens when particles of different sizes collide with each other. The same concept is used today in the study of physical and chemical reactions. The substance that is most often described as 'chemistry matter' is water. Water molecules are very small in size and many of them simply float on top of the water as the liquid floats on the top of the sea. These tiny particles of water molecules are called covalent bonds.A covalent bond is formed between a hydrogen atom and a proton, which are composed of two protons and two neutrons. The bonds that are formed between two atoms of water have a negative charge which holds them together. If you look at a molecule of water and a molecule of air under a microscope, you will see that the covalent bonds are much smaller than the actual molecules. This makes the water molecule look more like a bead in the water while the larger molecules of air look more like tiny balls. The bonds which hold the water molecules together are very weak and it is not possible for a force to be formed between the covalent bonds of water and the covalent bonds of air.It takes a strong force like that created by gravity to break the bonds. The strong force that forms between the water molecules is known as a potential energy and it forms when the water molecules are in motion. When a covalent bond forms between the water molecules, the water and air molecules are allowed to move around freely. The chemistry of water and the air molecules and the water molecules interacting with each other form s the fundamental law of nature. That is why a good understanding of chemistry is essential to any serious student of physics. Most people learn about the law of attraction through a syllabus, which outlines its relationship to physics.Being able to read a textbook is not a good enough answer to a good understanding of a subject such as physics, as we have to be able to comprehend it using nice mathematics. Chemists are trained in mathematics, which helps them to be able to understand more complicated concepts.

5 Tips for Writing Your Medical School Secondary Essays

5 Tips for Writing Your Medical School Secondary Essays The following piece was written by Linda Abraham. Linda has been featured in our Admissions Expert series and is the President and Founder of Accepted.com Your AMCAS applications are done, but the app writing party is far from over. Pretty soon, you hope to be swamped with secondary essays and the writing will need to be picked up again. Each med school will ask you for different information some will just want a check; some will want short answers; some will want essays. And some will want a combo. The following 5 tips will help you get through all of them:1.Timing is everything. You should complete each secondary application within two weeks of receiving it. That being said, please do not rush! Two weeks should be enough time to write persuasive, well-written essays. 2.Prioritize to hit important deadlines. If you have too many secondaries and too little time, then you should prioritize by first completing the secondary applications from your top choice med programs that is, those schools that you are most interested in attending and/or those that will most likely offer you an interview invite. Why bother spending precious time on a school that you dont care much about if itll detract from time spent on one of your top choices? Next, prioritize by the closest deadlines. 3.Research each school.Since you will be writing different essays for each secondary application, youll need to make sure that each of your essays speaks directly to the approach of each individual med school. Youll have an easier time catering each application to each school by knowing as much as possible about the program. Review the schools website and familiarize yourself with the curriculum and mission statement. Then try to incorporate some of that school-specific info into your essays. Why is this so important? The admissions readers are looking to admit students whom the school can help succeed in achieving their goals. They also want applicants who have the skills and motivation to contribute to their program. Write essays to illustrate that match, and youll do a better job of persuading the admissions readers that youre exactly what theyre looking for. 4.State motivations in state school essays. When explaining why you want to attend a particular state school, try and stress reasons that focus on mission, teaching style, goals, etc., rather than just on the schools proximity to home and its cost (though those are also valid reasons). Remember, you want to show why youre a good match youre up against lots of applicants who also want to attend a school close to home with in-state tuition. 5.Share new information about yourself.Your secondary application is an extension of your personal statement even more space for you to introduce your spectacular qualities, talents, and interests to the admissions reader. If you have important information that you couldnt incorporate into your AMCAS application, try and find a way to work it into your secondaries. And dont just repeat whats in the AMCAS. You can update, you can go deeper, and you can add to the AMCAS, but dont paraphrase it. And nowlet the secondary application writing party begin! Visit Accepted.com or find them on Facebook and Twitter. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.

Learn to Play Guitar 4 Common Myths Debunked

Learn to Play Guitar 4 Common Myths Debunked Suzy S. Always wanted to learn to play guitar? Sometimes the first step is the hardest one just simply getting started! Here,  Philip R.  shares the top myths and realities when it comes to playing Not me, I cant, but you dont understand. How many times have these phrases held us back? How many plans were scrapped by us over the years, as negativity held its death grip around our throats? Answer: too many. As you learn to play guitar for the first time, most students are susceptible to such doubtful thinking. We marvel at musicians as doing something magical. But it is imperative that you remember they ALL started somewhere. That being said, there are several nagging myths the newcomer to guitar struggles with before even holding the instrument. I am here to debunk some of the most common myths I usually hear as students learn to play guitar. I believe overcoming these persistent myths is the first step to learning the guitar. So, without further adieu, here they are: Myth #1: “My hands and fingers are too small.” Simply NOT true. I personally have small hands and fingers and it hasn’t held me back or been a detriment to my playing guitar. In full disclosure, it does help to have long fingers but mostly for very technical tricks you will learn much later on in your development. Please remember, it is not VITAL to playing the guitar and you can play thousands of songs with short fingers and hands. Don’t let this common myth hold you back from as you learn to play guitar. My fingers aren’t much bigger than my nine-year-old nephew’s fingers. Myth #2: “I am tone deaf.” This one can be overcome easily, if you find the right guitar teacher who knows how to  train your ears to hear and distinguish tones and more importantly changes in tones. This is a skill that can be learned, like riding a bike or tying your shoelaces. It is best achieved through tuning exercises, practiced again and again, as well as comprehensive ear-training drills. It is necessary of course to be able to tune your guitar. I have personally helped my students overcome, in nearly every case, their perception of being tone deaf in a few short months. These students even went on to listening to a song and recognizing the chords and notes BY EAR, without the aid of tabs, sight reading or YouTube videos. Myth #3: “I don’t have the time to practice.” Well, I have to admit it; in our busy world this is a big one. However, I have always recommended to my students, at all levels, that they put aside only 20 minutes to a half-hour of time. Two to three times a week of slow, deliberate practice is all you need to grasp the concepts and techniques required for playing the guitar. Now granted, practice is repetitious. There is really no way around this. Guitar is learned through repetition but the rewards are so great. Imagine being able to put a CD into your stereo, listening to a song for 15-20 minutes, writing down the chords you hear as you go along, and then PLAYING that song you love. It can happen. I’ve seen it with my own students, mostly within the first five months, if they met me halfway and practiced regularly. It is always a two-way street. Myth #4: “Guitars are really expensive.” These days a new, decent quality guitar can be had for $99. I don’t recommend spending a ton of money up front until you see if you like playing the guitar first.  Of course, you get what you pay for, but remember you can learn on cheaper  guitars just as well as on expensive ones. My first guitar was $40 and was purchased out of a catalog. I had it for years and that was the guitar I learned on.  Besides, you can always get a better guitar as you progress on the instrument.  Just be patient. You have to start somewhere, but you can do it. Well, there you have it. Four guitar myths debunked and up in flames. Please don’t let these or any guitar myths hold you back from taking guitar lessons. You can do it! Make the  most of your life and have fun. You deserve to play your favorite songs on guitar. It will be a skill that lasts a lifetime. Philip R. teaches online guitar lessons. In beginner lessons, students will learn how to tune a guitar, change strings, strum, scales, finger exercises and 28 chords used in today’s most popular music. Book lessons with Philip here!
